Here’s a promo video that our man Alex Forster made during the recordings:

What is The Happening?

The Happening is a gathering of eclectic musicians from different musical backgrounds coming from allover the world to meet in a special location for one week, to write and record improvised and spontaneous music.

The natural chemistry between musicians is the most important thing when writing and creating something out of nowhere, and Jamie Catto, the creator of this unbelievable project, is a master at choosing the people who will be part of The Happening. It feels like we have all known each other for many years, when in fact sometimes, we only meet for the first time to record the album.

I’m very grateful and blessed to be a part of ‘These Are My Diamonds’ with Dave Randall on guitars, Renaud-Gabriel Pion on woodwinds, Lévon Minassian on duduk, Alex Forster on the sound board/co-producing,  Suzy Von Sonntag, Leon Schultz, Jens Scheuter, Vince DeCicco, and Louis McGuire.

Onto the next musical adventure…

Recording with Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin

Hello everyone –

I’m very pleased to tell you that I recently recorded with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin.

Toshiko and Lew are two incredible musicians and the most wonderful people. For those who are not familiar with their work, their big band is one of the most legendary in jazz, Toshiko is a 14-time Grammy nominee, they have written some wonderful music through the years and are still kicking! Highly recommended music.

The session was done at MSR Studios, recorded and mixed by Dave Darlington. Special thanks to Brad Leigh and Monday Michiru. Big ups to the musicians: an excellent group of string players, Lew Tabackin on flute, Paul Gill on double bass, Aaron Kimmel on drums, Toshiko Akiyoshi conducting and yours truly on keyboards.

Looking forward to more sessions like this one, this is why I love what I do…

Monday Michiru is Brasilified!

Image

I am very happy to announce the release of Monday Michiru‘s latest project, ‘Brasilified‘.

Working with Monday has been a unique experience and I feel honored to be the producer of this record.

I’d like to tell you how wonderful it has been to work on this album, Monday is an incredible writer, singer, musician and artist all around and has a deep understanding of the meaning of working with others, making this record was making music at its best!

None of this could have happened without this super team: Masa Shimizu (guitars and bass), Itaiguara Brandão (guitars and bass), Mauricio Zottarelli (drums and percussion), Alex Sipiagin – who did a terrific job arranging the horns and playing trumpet and flugelhorn- , Seamus Blake on sax and master Dave Darlington at the mixing board.

I have written two songs for Brasilified, and here goes a special mention to my long-time and über-talented friend Zé Luis Oliveira, with whom I co-wrote ‘Things I Say’, one of the songs in the album. Zé Luis is a terrific musician, producer and composer who has worked with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Cazuza, Gal Costa and many other incredible artists.

Brasilified is released by Billboard Records and Celebrate (Parabens) – one of the songs from the album – is already climbing the Tokyo Hot 100 chart in Japan. Go Monday!

Here’s a very nice short film about the making of Brasilified. Check it out!

‘Reject’ premieres at the 37th Cleveland International Film Festival

Hello everyone!

I recently came back from the 37th Cleveland International Film Festival where I had the pleasure to attend the premiere of ‘Reject‘, the wonderful film directed by Ruth Thomas. As some of you might already know I wrote the soundtrack for this film – it’s a unique feeling to be sitting in a packed movie theater being able to listen to your music that way… Adrenaline!

Reject‘ was incredibly well received, every screening was sold out and this (my ego aside) made me particularly happy because of the message the movie carries, informing more and more people about the very important subject of social rejection.

I’d like to thank once again Ruth Thomas, Peter Brauer, Kurt Engfehr who did a stellar job with this project. The Cleveland team was amazing, impeccable organization. Thank you Brenda Benthien for your kindness and all the festival associates and volunteers.

L to R: Peter Brauer (producer/editor), Prof. Kip Williams (social psychology expert), Ruth Thomas (director/producer), Dr. Herbert E. Thomas (author of ‘The Shame Response to Rejection’), Simone Giuliani (composer)

ImageWhile at the festival I watched some other great films: Good Ol’ Freda directed by Ryan White, the amazing story of Freda Kelly, the Beatles‘ secretary.

I had the luck of sharing a ride from the airport with Freda and we hit it off, what a wonderful lady.  Here’s me and Freda at the festival HQ.

A beautiful film I watched is Rafea: Solar Mama directed by the über-talented Mona Eldaief.

This is the incredible story of a Bedouin woman, Rafea, who travels to India to become a solar engineer. If she succeeds, she will be able to electrify her village, train more engineers, and provide for her daughters.

That’s all for now folks! I’m writing you from Bass Hit Studios in New York where I’m producing the new Monday Michiru album, she sounds amazing – stay tuned for more news and enjoy the Spring.

Music power,
Simone

The Happening

Image

Just finished recording one of the most exciting albums with The Happening.

The Happening is a gathering of eclectic musicians from different musical backgrounds coming from allover the world to meet in a special location for one week, to write and record improvised music. I have been blessed to participate to the past two recordings: one in Berlin last September and the last one in Wiltshire (UK), a few days ago.

I’m very grateful to be a part of this international open band along with Dave Randall on guitars, Renaud-Gabriel Pion on woodwinds, Lévon Minassian on duduk, Alex Forster on the sound board/co-producing, Simone White, Suzy Von Sonntag, Matt Webb, Leon Schultz, Jens Scheuter, Vince DeCicco, Louis McGuire and in past editions Duncan Bridgeman, Maxi Jazz and many other talented friends.

Here are some pics from the last two Happening editions (Berlin and UK) – enjoy!
